Keeping Watch

English

`
Where do you look and not have eyes staring back?
What creates an empty space in times when everyone is being seen?

As our world goes deeper into exploration of matter without soul, we struggle to find ourselves.
The depiction of who we are begins to shimmer and fade slowly, so one must try harder to find the person inside.

Eat till you burst, yes.
I’ll be on the lookout
I’ll watch lives infest
I’ll look hard at the disease spread
I’ll see the scavengers rip your flesh apart
                        no need to worry

                         I’ll
                             be on the lookout
taking proper care
don’t worry
I promise I’ll be keeping watch.

between Changes

Each spring, Kashmir returns with its contradictions.
Plum blossoms and unpredictability.
Light and loss.
Srinagar now carries a different weight.
The city wears a new face: a smart city, they call it.
Electric buses hum past manicured boulevards, the lake reflects cleaner edges, floodlights crown the Shankaracharya Hill, and tricolours bloom like wildflowers across every street.

This work begins in that dissonance. Between the city's polished surfaces and the silent changes inside a home that is slowly emptying out.
The images hold moments where something didn't sit right.
Where beauty leaned too far into discomfort,
where stillness threatened to crack.
I try to ask why.

Beneath the lights and the slogans, the occupation still hums, persistent and quiet. The cracks are not always visible, but they remain. In this city of constant revision, the camera becomes a way to sit with what doesn’t settle.

The photographs try to show what is, and are aided by the words and the music in the quest to reveal all the conversations that happen, when everyone is forced to be silent.

03.Lockdown: Delhi + Kashmir

2020-22
35mm & 120 film

Shot on expired black and white film during the pandemic, these photographs dwell in the space between memory and emptiness.
The emulsion, already unstable, carries the weight of halved time.
